The city of St. Augustine is following in Jacksonville’s footsteps by offering homeowners a free tree, with planting included.

St. Augustine is launching its Tree Canopy Enhancement Program, which encourages homeowners to apply to have a tree planted in the right-of-way in front of their home or on their private property.

Homeowners can apply online from June 1 through August 31, with a choice of nine available tree species:

  • Slash Pine
  • Hackberry / Sugarberry
  • Live Oak
  • Flowering Dogwood
  • East Palatka Holly
  • Red Cedar
  • Redbud
  • Walter’s Viburnum
  • Yaupon Holly.

The city’s staff will review the applications and do a site survey of each of the homes to make sure the tree fits the available space. To qualify, applicants must own the property and the property must be residential.

The trees will be planted between November and February. Homeowners will be responsible for the care of the trees once planted.
